Founded by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert, Conservationist, Author and Artist, Colleen Paige, who is also the brainchild behind a plethora of worldwide trending philanthropic holidays, such as National Dog Day, National Cat Day, National Puppy Day and many more. Her savvy, sought-after advice ranges from animal behavior and animal/environmental conservation to child/pet nutrition and as a former EMT/Paramedic, pet & child safety.

Colleen founded National Beach Day in 2014 to celebrate the place she spent most of her childhood...summer days in sunny Southern California. Coming across a baby Pelican one day in 2009 that was starving to death because of fishing line wrapped around it's wing and beak, after she freed the bird of its death trap, she knew she needed to create a day that helped to highlight the plight of sea birds and ocean mammals due to the deadly trash left on beaches around the globe. Colleen is urging everyone who loves their beach to plan a beach bbq clean-up on August 30th and tag your photos with #nationalbeachday.

Where does beach sand come from?

The giant bumphead parrotfish is an amazing fish that can live to be 40 years old, growing up to four feet long and 100 pounds. They use their large head bumps to literally bump heads during competitive displays, when large numbers of fish aggregate to spawn on a lunar cycle. The bumphead parrotfish excretes white sand, which it may produce at the rate of several hundred pounds a year!

Sea Bird covered in oil from spill.

Apart from celebrating our favorite beaches, the goal of National Beach Day is to encourage beach lovers to clean up trash left behind by others on the beach. Thousands of sea birds, seals, pelicans and other beach/sea animals are killed and injured every day by discarded fishing line, plastic bags, aluminum cans, oil spills and other debris. These items poison animals and get tangled in wings, beaks and intestines, causing pain, starvation and the slow painful death of these innocent animals.

Help keep your beach beautiful and safe for everyone...including the animals.
